Arucas

Our first stop is the main town of the northern side of Gran Canaria , the beautiful and pleasantly captivating Arucas . It is not very far from the island, because it is only separated by the Barranco de Tenoya . For the most part, the town is predominantly focused on the remarkable Parish Church of San Juan Bautista , which is patterned in the neo-Gothic style. Also, if you have not yet enough of historical architecture, the town of Arucas likewise prides itself with a fair share of historical buildings. Many of them are done in the style practiced throughout the 19 th century.

There is a misconception, however, and some people are lead to believe that the church is called Cathedral of Arucas, -- which is wrong. Anyway, this magnificent church features a tower that stands an impressive height of 60 meters. And to add icing to the cake, did you know that the tower is the highest tower in the whole of Gran Canaria ? Quite amazing, isn t it? The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista is designed by a Catalan architect who went by the name of Manuel Vega March. Its construction began in 1909, but since it featured many stages and involved detailed designs, it was only completed in 1977. Today, you can feast your eyes in its elaborate stained-glass windows and retable. Also not to be missed is the sculpture of Cristo Yacente, or the wrestling Christ. It was a work of a local artist in the place.
Assuming you still want to check out architectural buildings in the town, we ve included a brief overview of two of them which are considered of great architectural heritage. Both of them, by the way, are situated at the Plaza de la Constitución, or Constitution Square as some people refer to it. First is the old Town Hall . Its construction dates back to as early as 1875, but it was entirely renovated in 1932. The second building we recommend is the Municipal Market . One of its most important assets is the space appointed to it. If you want to take a breather, then head on straight to the Municipal Garden, referred to as Jardin de Hespérides . There you can unwind under the shady areas in the midst of tropical trees and plants. After you ve already had your little break, take the Calle de la Heredad to be able to observe yet another of the town s awe-inspiring architecture, the Heredad de Aguas de Arucas y Firgas . It was constructed in 1908, and at present it is where the Water Board is. Oh, and you need not worry about not being able to find it, because the Calle de la Heredad is just the street around the park.

Here s a trivia we thought you would be interested to find out. Did you know that the town of Arucas is also synonymous to the City of Rum? The tagline is rightly appropriate because it is where the Fábrica y Museo del Ron can be found. The fabrica is the biggest sugar cane factory in the whole of Gran Canaria . In fact, the Fábrica y Museo del Ron has an annual production of rum that amounts to more than 3.5 litres. It was built in 1884, and today visitors can marvel at its long and colorful history and the detailed procedures involved in rum production processes at the museum the fabrica features. You may also want to check out rows and rows of interesting barrels that hold the signatures of well-known personalities such as the renowned tenors Alfredo Kraus and Plácido Domingo as well as the Spanish royal family.

If you want to get a breath of fresh air, then go to the northern part of Arucas . The Montaña de Arucas is just approximately 1 mile from the town proper. The mountain stands at 412 meters and is considered as the highest peak of this pleasantly delightful town. You can find a restaurant set atop the Montaña de Arucas , and it is a very soothing experience to sample the regional cuisines and drinks while basking in the scenic view from the top. A lot of people are captivated by it and we are almost certain so will you!

If you happen to be in this vicinity during June, make sure you don t miss the town s most celebrated fiesta every 24 th of the month. It is the feast day of Arucas patron saint San Juan Bautista.
