Gáldar

If you continue following the road down the coast, you will eventually find yourself in Gáldar , our next destination. On the off chance that you are curious what does the name of this city mean, we ll let you in on that little bit of information. It is actually derived from Agaldar, which can be roughly translated to mean Royal City. This very old town used to be the cradle or the center of the Guanche civilization. So it just goes to follow that it is very abundant in archeological sites. If you love archeology, do we need to tell you we highly recommend going to Gáldar ? But then again, on second thought, this town has something to offer almost everyone, so visitors -- no matter what their interests are -- are more than welcome to include Gáldar in their list of places to go to. Anyway, going back to the town s history, the post-conquest town of Gáldar was built way back in 1484. It was also once considered the kingdom of Tenesor Semidan , who was known as one of Gran Canaria s two Guanche chiefs. It is, then, understandable and within the course of logic if the town really takes pride in its rich history that goes back centuries earlier. In fact, to attest to that, many of Gáldar s streets have been derived from Guanche names. Also, you might be even more intrigued about this island if you know that is was formerly the capital of Gran Canaria , before it became Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .
At present, though, we know Gáldar to be a bustling, lively and thriving town that is picturesquely located at the foot of the Pico de Gáldar . But whatever your impression of this ton may be, we are almost sure you will like it as much as most of its visitors already have! Keep on unveiling many of its well-kept secret and you are bound to make your visit to this town even more memorable!
