Teror

If you find yourself interested in anything bespeaking colonial style, then the appealing and pleasant town of Teror will surely delight you. There you can feast your eyes on rows upon rows of mansions all designed in colonial style. Teror , for the most part, is focused with and highlighted by the Basilica de la Virgen , or what is also regarded as the Madonna of the Pine Tree. It was built in the 18 th century and was the third church to be built in the vicinity. In 1515, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has many features which constantly awe the visitors, and to name just a few of them, we suggest you take note of the triple-nave found inside the basilica, which holds the altar done in Baroque style; the finely dressed and intricately carved statue of the Virgin Mary standing amidst the votives of presents and gifts; the religious figures all made by Luján Pérez; and last but far from the least, five of the most significant Rococo paintings in the whole of Gran Canaria .
According to legend, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared on top of a pine tree to a number of shepherds way back in 1481. From then on, the Nuestra Señora del Pino, or Our Lady of the Pines, has contributed largely to the course of history of the entire Gran Canaria , as well as to the day to day activities of local residents of the island. In 1914, Pope Pius XII declared Nuestra Señora del Pino as the patron saint of the whole Gran Canaria . Since then, the pious town of Teror has been considered as the island s religious capital.

If you want to participate in Teror s festivities, then the month of September is a good time to visit this town. Every 8 th of the month is reserved for the Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino, or the Feast of Our Lady of the Pines. Since she is the patron saint of Teror , you can expect the feast to be a really major one. In fact, many visitors and devotees from different towns and cities all over Gran Canaria come to the town to pray to the Virgin Mary and to participate in the feast. So important is the Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino that it is not only regarded as the largest and main event in Teror , it is also considered as the most important religious feast in the calendar of the entire Gran Canaria ! The feast usually takes place for the duration of a week.
